You Can Be a Lifeline to People in Solitary Confinement
Lifelines to Solitary Forges Vital Connections Across Prison Walls
For tens of thousands of people locked away in U.S. prisons and jails, the extreme deprivation and isolation of solitary confinement causes unimaginable suffering. One person living in solitary described his existence to us as “a soul-destroying loneliness that never ends.”
This kind of isolation causes so much pain. It severs people from any kind of human existence—turning people into numbers, sending souls into silence.
That’s where Lifelines to Solitary comes in.
For nearly 700 individuals in solitary, Lifelines provides an actual pen pal—someone who listens and responds to their daily struggles, their ideas and interests, heartaches and hopes.
SUPPORTING LIFELINES CREATES A CONNECTION THAT TRULY MATTERS.
This year, we’re opening up the Lifelines program to even more people, inside and out. Thanks to NewsMatch, any donations through December 31st are doubled, allowing us to make more of these profound connections.
“I can’t tell you how touched I am for you giving me any attention. I am so grateful to you and cried tears reading your card because the torture, abuse and neglect I’m facing makes this cell and my world a lonely place, and many days I think of how to take my own life and end the misery and pain but you inspire me and I continue to fight on.’’
LIFELINES CAN DO MORE WITH YOUR SUPPORT.
These treasured moments of human connection that reach across prison walls are only possible with your support. Lifelines has no grant funding—the costs of running Lifelines to Solitary must be completely covered by individual donations. Only with your help can we continue to match new people in solitary with correspondents on the outside, bringing messages from the outside world to thousands more men and women suffering in darkness.
HELP BREAK THROUGH THE BARRIERS OF SOLITARY.
Please consider making a donation today. This is the last month for NewsMatch, when all donations are DOUBLED, making yours the hardest working—and the most meaningful—gift you can give not just to us, but to the souls in solitary as well.
With gratitude and best wishes,
